Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment is a procedure that makes it possible to save a tooth and avoid extraction.

Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp inside the tooth, which consists of nerve tissue, blood vessels, and connective tissue, becomes inflamed or infected by bacteria. There are many possible causes of inflammation or infection: deep decay, numerous dental procedures, a crack in the tooth, or a missing fragment. In addition, a strong blow to the tooth can cause irreversible damage to the pulp even if there are no visible cracks or fractures in the tooth. If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain and lead to the formation of an abscess. Signs of pulp damage include pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot and cold, discoloration of the tooth, and swelling and tenderness of the gums. There are also cases where no symptoms occur at all.

A root canal specialist removes the inflamed or infected pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the root canals inside the tooth, and then fills and seals them. Later, the tooth will need a crown or other restoration in order to protect it and restore full functionality. After restoration, the tooth functions like any other tooth.

Root canal retreatment

Root canal retreatment is a procedure that makes it possible to save a tooth when previous root canal treatment has not been successful.

This is a complex procedure that requires the help of a specialist. Its successful performance requires extensive prior experience and equipment such as a microscope. During retreatment it is often necessary to remove old root filling materials, remove instruments from the canals, seal perforations, and get past ledges already present in the canals, but for us this is everyday work. Many teeth that were removed in the past can now be saved.

Microsurgical root canal treatment

If inflammation or infection remains in the bone surrounding the root after root canal treatment, microsurgical root canal treatment may be the best solution. During the microsurgical procedure, the gum around the tooth is opened to expose the root, after which the infected tissue is removed. The tip of the root is removed, and a filling is placed into the canal. This makes it possible to eliminate the cyst and inflammation around the root. Local anesthesia makes the procedure comfortable, and most patients return to their usual activities as early as the next day. The advantage of this method is less trauma and a better result compared with classic cyst removal.

A microscope is used in performing this and all other procedures.
